Ensuring online content accessibility is vital for inclusivity, especially for users relying on assistive technologies like screen readers. Alternative text (alt text) plays a key role in making visual elements accessible, yet businesses, particularly in e-commerce, struggle to generate high-quality alt text that meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). While AI-powered alt-text generation tools exist, they often fail to provide accurate, contextually appropriate descriptions. The lack of standardized assessment metrics further complicates evaluating alt-text effectiveness.

This research conducts a systematic literature review to explore existing evaluation tools for assessing alt-text quality on e-commerce websites. The study aims to identify available methods, challenges, and gaps in alt-text evaluation, focusing on compliance with WCAG standards and AI-driven approaches. Academic databases such as IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar will be searched using keywords like “alt-text evaluation” and “e-commerce accessibility.” Only peer-reviewed studies published in the last ten years will be included.

Expected outcomes include an analysis of current tools, insights into AI-based evaluation methods, and recommendations for improving alt-text assessment frameworks. Findings will be shared through reports, conferences, and journal articles, contributing to the development of standardized metrics and enhancing digital accessibility in e-commerce and beyond.
